Last night the Western Scrabble Network held a meeting at Blaxland with 9 attendees. What made this meeting a little different from the usual, was that one of the attendees, Phillip Burdge, was sitting at home 4,000 kilometres away, linked up to us by internet.
During the course of the evening (or late afternoon from Phils perspective as he is 3 hours behind), members took turns at playing each other and playing Phil on ISC, using the clubs communal handle, mooi. Phil managed to get 6 games in variously with Jean, Pam, 2 games with Tony, one with Tony & Mark combined as a team, and one with Mark.
The chat facility on the right hand site of the ISC screen meant that we could include Phil in our conversations, and discuss aspects of the game.
Being in suburban
Perth, Phil has ready access to a number of great scrabble clubs, but
the point that I believe we ably demonstrated last night, is that where
you live need not necessarily be a barrier to active involvement
in the scrabble community. We would encourage any of you who know people
who have access to the internet, who like Scrabble, and who live in an
area where there are no existing Scrabble clubs to explore the possibilities
of linking with such people in a similar manner. 8th November 2003 WSN has it's first interstate member join, Phil Burdge from Western Australia. Welcome Phil! 3rd November 2003 Tony Hunt and Mark Smith attend a regular games evening held at the Orient Hotel at Springwood with a view to promote the game within our local area. 31st October 2003 Tony Hunt and Mark Smith attend Blaxland High School to give a demonstration game and provide support for the creation of a club and round robin style tournament.
