Club History

The Western Scrabble Network was borne out of the Blue Mountains Scrabble Club after it was decided to break up the original club into one that had a tournament-style focus and another that had a more social focus. This meeting occurred on 2nd September 2003.

In the week following this meeting a committee of three was formed and a Mission Statement was agreed upon. Soon after, it was decided that we would stage a tournament in 2004, on Saturday March 27th. This was held at Springwood NSW.

By the end of September 2003, members spanned the Blue Mountains from Penrith to Katoomba, however, we are keen to extend our geographical reach in recognition that there were limited opportunities for people living in the suburbs west of Parramatta, as well as the Hawkesbury and Liverpool/Macarthur regions.

At its commencement in early September 2003, the club had 4 electronic clocks for the use of members, as well as 4 game sets and reference material. From its outset, the Western Scrabble network has been active in fostering Scrabble within schools. We have an attitude of taking on board anybody who wants to learn irrespective of age.

When we founded the Western Scrabble Network, one of our key aims was to foster an environment where people could improve their Scrabble skills as well as make new friends. The concept of a 'home meeting' seemed to suit this objective well. After discussion with a few members, we thought it might be useful to have some 'guidelines' to running home meetings. These guidelines will assist you in having great home meetings and are available to members of the Network.

BENEFITS OF HOSTING MEETINGS

  • No need to travel to play every week (or fortnight), no travel expenses;
  • Ensures your commitment to Scrabble and will improve your game;
  • Feeling of contribution to the growth and development of Scrabble in your area;
  • Saves on the cost of venue hire;
  • Hosting is fun!

You will find tools to assist you in running home meetings available through WSN. For example, score sheets - these are downloadable from the Forms section in the Members' Only section of the website. We can also assist with the provision of clocks, subject to certtain conditions being met.

Some interesting facts (as reported by Tony Hunt):

  • Of the 10 players in the comp, 2 were from WA and the 3 hrs time
    difference had to be accounted for. No difficulties were reported.

  • After 27 games, Colleen McCormick ended with a margin of exactly zero.
  • Colleen's high game score of 637 was nearly 100 points greater than the
    next highest score - well done Colleen. This is also a record high score for
    a WSN member since the club began.
  • The high word for the tourney was played in the very last game by my
    sweetheart, Melinda, TACKLERS for 107 points, edging out Pat Schuberg and
    Phil Burdge who were tied on 104 with SQUINTER and SEALINE respectively.
  • Sheela Sree Kumar went on a one month holiday during the comp, but this
    did not affect her ability to compete as the games were played in advance,
    by agreement with the other players concerned.

A club meeting with a difference

Last night the Western Scrabble Network held a meeting at Blaxland with 9 attendees. What made this meeting a little different from the usual, was that one of the attendees, Phillip Burdge, was sitting at home 4,000 kilometres away, linked up to us by internet.

During the course of the evening (or late afternoon from Phil’s perspective as he is 3 hours behind), members took turns at playing each other and playing Phil on ISC, using the club’s communal handle, mooi. Phil managed to get 6 games in variously with Jean, Pam, 2 games with Tony, one with Tony & Mark combined as a team, and one with Mark.

The chat facility on the right hand site of the ISC screen meant that we could include Phil in our conversations, and discuss aspects of the game.

Being in suburban Perth, Phil has ready access to a number of great scrabble clubs, but the point that I believe we ably demonstrated last night, is that ‘where you live’ need not necessarily be a barrier to active involvement in the scrabble community. We would encourage any of you who know people who have access to the internet, who like Scrabble, and who live in an area where there are no existing Scrabble clubs to explore the possibilities of linking with such people in a similar manner.
