General Tips

  1. Before a tournament, test yourself on the 2 letter words. There’s only 124 of them – try to write out the list.
  2. Balance your rack between vowels and consonants using words like: EUOI EAU AIA OO ULU UTU AALII AUDIO AUE AUA
  3. Seek to get maximum value for the heavy letters: X,J, Z and Q
  4. Don’t hang onto the Q for too long!
  5. Use LeXpert as a learning tool. If you’re really keen, test yourself on lists such as “high probability sevens” or “high probability eights”.
  6. Have fun! Its just a game after all!
  7. Learn as many q without u,other obscure q words,and words that have q other then the first letter of the word as you can - Submtted by Rich Thomas

How to remember to place the 5 vowels in the word SEQUOIA in the right place. Eskimos-Use-Oil-In- America - unattributed, but seems rather Arie Hollaesque.

Anamonics

Here’s a couple of “anamonics” – cross between an anagram and a mnemonic.

  1. INMATE"relaxing by his cell door". Explanation: “INMATE” combines with every letter in the phrase “relaxing by his cell door” to make a 7-letter word. E.g. ANYTIME, AMBIENT, TAXIMEN etc.
  2. Similarly, ORANGE – “Dirty cow’s bottom”. E.g. BEGROAN, NEGATOR, MARENGO etc.

Other

Aniseed is a useful 7 letter word as it has no anagrams and it contains high-probability letters. According to some sources, aniseed oil can be used to ease menstrual pain. There is another link between aniseed and 'menstrual' in that ANISEED, when combined with another letter, makes 11 different 8 letter words.

The only letters that combine with ANISEED to make an 8 are the consonants in MENSTRUAL, i.e. MNSTRL. Collins update: ANISEED + G = AGENISED

The complete list being:

M: DEMAINES, INSEAMED;

N: ADENINES, ANDESINE;

S: ANISEEDS;

T: ANDESITE;

R: ARSENIDE, DENARIES, DRAISENE, NEARSIDE;

L: DELAINES;

G: AGENISED
